Fog at night in Willimantic

Just before Thanksgiving the weather becomes warmer in much of the eastern part of the United States. Fog is more present than usual with this warm weather and it creates some interesting contrasts because of the now bare branches of trees. People are ready for the cold and have mixed feelings about this extended mild temperature. The countryside surrounding Willimantic is mostly very small towns where argriculture is still a major part of day to day life for people. Stones are part of New England. Farmers refer to stones as the major crop because the freezing termperatures in the winter raise the stones in the soil and thus give the appearance that they grow. Connecticut is filled with stone fences that were originally made by farmers clearing their fields of stones so they could raise crops. Like the Mill many buildings are made of stone as well.

The night picture above this text was taken in Willimantic where the orange color created by mercury vapor lamps combined with the fog. No color retouching was done to the image.

On the weekend before Thanksgiving a fund raising event was held in Willimantic called the Walk for Warmth. It was sponsored by the WIAM an interfaith ministry that actively provides support for needy people in the community. The Walk for Warmth raises money that is set aside for people who cannot afford the cost of heat during the winter. It is used to help families in times of crisis. The bottom picture shows a group that is part of over 150 people who walked for pledges and contributions to raise money for the heat fund. Balloons were offered to the walkers as the prepared for the walk. The photo shows a part of the group as they walk along Main Street.
