Internet

Internet has become a subject on so many agendas that it seems to be the most important part of the whole computing world. There are some unique things about the Internet that make this true. First of these is that it is a free forum. No one physically controls or dictates the content of the Internet. It has revolutionized the way that we communicate with each other. Email offers a real alternative to telephone tag and networking in our non-stop world.

It is certain that the Internet, still in its infancy, has already changed the way we communicate and is going to have a radical impact on all of our lives for years to come. Some very large businesses have invested huge amounts to create the commercial sites that they hope to be the marketplaces of the future. Amazon Books which sells more books on the Internet than any other company is still operating at a loss. There are small companies who have had great success on the Internet and the reasons are not always apparent or obvious. Powell's Books which is Amazon's second hand book resource makes money on the Internet.

If you are considering a commercial presence on the Internet, you cannot deal with it as if it is simply another retail outlet. There are a great many factors involved in deciding what it is you want your Internet presence to do for your organization. In many cases direct commerce is neither wise or practical. On the other hand, for some businesses, it is both. As you approach the Internet you should be willing to look at it as a truly unique type of media.
